Deer Grove fall update
After numerous discussions with the forest preserve I got the OK for two new trails in Deer Grove East. One will be completed this year and the second will be constructed next year. The first trail will connect the Wayne Trail to the Secret Trail. This will complete a secondary loop for the Brown Trail. As always the forest preserve has requested the removal of buckthorn to allow an additional trail. Next years trail will make an additional loop connecting the Chuck Trail to the Multipurpose Trail. This trail will be more complicates to construct due to the immense amount of barberry.
This year started out rather poorly due to the equestrian abuse to the new trail we built last year. We have approached the two stables that use our trails, requested there assistance for our trail work days, and for them to not use the trails from March 15th to April 15th. We also reinforced the idea of not riding within 24 hours of rainfall to keep the impact to a minimum. The forest preserves action to stone the multipurpose trails in Deer Grove was met with opposition from the mountain bike community. Through all my discussions with the forest preserve about this situation this was something that has been planned for a long time and they would not negotiate on the issue. The single-track trails that we built were not supposed to be touched, one has been molested and I have had assurances from Mr. Hart that it will not get stoned. The landscape architect informed me that there were two small segments of the multipurpose trail that they were planning on stoning that they will not do now. It appears that the new signage that has been put in place this summer is an asset for everyone.
Now for the good news, the forest preserve has agreed to allow mountain biking in additional areas. We have earmarked three separate forest preserves for new mountain bike trails. Each one of these properties needs to be thoroughly inspected for potential mountain bike use. We will have to go through the normal trail approval process. Last bit of old business, we are still waiting for the installation of an additional drop gate at Camp Alphonse. This will allow us to use additional parking spaces that are available at Camp Alphonse. Quentin Rd is scheduled to be widened in ’06, when that happens Camp Reinburgs parking lot is in total jeopardy. |
